With the existing Culloden Visitor Centre, built in the 1970s, struggling to cope with visitor numbers, owners National Trust for Scotland commissioned a scheme that would transform the site into a £9 million, state of the art, sustainable Centre, museum and memorial, able to handle up to 250,000 visitors a year.
The Centre now houses battlefield information, education and conference facilities, a café, restaurant and a shop.
Challenge
IMA contractor SRSGroup was asked to install a hybrid roof, comprising flat, curved and green roofing, in order to provide an eco-friendly and sustainable solution in keeping with the building’s design specification.

The green roof was also designed to serve as a viewing platform from which visitors could see the moorland site and the battlefield.
Solution
SRS Group installed Icopal’s Sure-Weld TPO membrane at the Centre, a sustainable product which met the eco-friendly specification, and which is specially formulated to withstand long term exposure without the use of either polymeric or liquid plasticisers.
Sure-Weld was installed on the striking curved roof sections, designed to reflect the distant hills, and under the accessible green roof, which was fully adhered meaning that detailing was simplified.
The Centre was opened in April 2007, on the anniversary of the battle of Culloden and during Scotland’s Year of Highland Culture.
