Nant Gwrtheyrn Welsh Language Centre - Green Roof

The Nant Gwrtheyrn Welsh Language Centre is located on the north coast of the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales, on the site of a former quarrying village. After the nearby quarries closed in 1939, many local buildings fell into disrepair but in 1978 a group of cottages was converted into the Welsh Language Centre, which has provided resources to over 250,000 people since it opened.

IMA contractor JPR Roofing & Flooring Ltd was asked to install a green roof over the café area of the Centre, built as part of a redevelopment project designed to improve conferencing and catering facilities in order to maintain the level of service demanded by the facility. The site presented many challenges for the roofing team; the location was inaccessible for larger lorries, making the logistics of multiple deliveries difficult, and the coastal location also demanded a green roof solution that was particularly resistant to wind uplift.

JPR Roofing & Flooring recommended BMI UK & Ireland’s exceptionally robust TotalTorch and Rootbar capsheet system to waterproof the roof, and then Icopal’s EasyGreen modular green roof system, which comprises interconnecting modules containing all the components required for a green roof. As a result, the sedum planting was already established when installed, making the roof more tolerant of uplift from the coastal winds experiences at Nant Gwrtheyrn. The modular design also simplified the logistics required to get the materials on site and on to the roof deck, and resulted in a quick and easy installation by the roofing team.

The new facilities now comprise four-star accommodation, together with conference and wedding facilities, and a new café-bar and heritage centre, made possible by £5m in grants from the European and Welsh Assembly Governments.
