Project: Bradford Royal Infirmary
Materials Used: Asphalt Deck, Total Torch Vcl, 120mm Insulation, Monarplan
The spiralling cost of heating prompted management at Bradford Royal Infirmary to commission an aerial thermal survey of the site; this revealed extensive heat loss across the many roofs making up the hospital complex, and so a complete reroofing was commissioned.
Having won the first phase of the project, Watershed was then awarded the entire contract to renew or replace over 10,000m2 of roofing over a 12-month period.
Given the piecemeal nature of the Hospital complex, the different ages of the various buildings (from Victorian to modern), and the variable state of individual roofs, Watershed began by undertaking a strategic assessment across the site in order to determine the best approach.
Where conditions allowed, an inverted solution of ballasted insulation was sufficient, but for many roofs the fully insulated Monarplan system was best option. In both cases, the new roofs provide excellent insulation, and will extend the lifespan of the roof by greatly improving waterproofing performance.
The Infirmary estimates that the energy savings to be made are so significant that they will be able to recoup their investment in a relatively short period of time, as well as reducing the environmental footprint of the building as a whole.
